Proverbs 4:7-9
Afya (Swahili/Arabic)~
Health (the state of being free from and of physical or psychological dis-ease, illness, or malfunction); Wholeness of mind, body, and spirit!
Please email us at thatafyalife@theafyaeffect.com or text us at
757-854-9688 if you cannot find an answer to your question below!
Nope!! However, we do center the Black (African) American experience (and other historically marginalized persons of color), and its implications on the health (i.e., epigenetics) and well-being of this population, especially in this current political and social environment.
Our mission is that ALL people prosper in ALL ways, always, by way of experiencing Afya (Swahili/Arabic): Health (the state of being free from and of physical or psychological dis-ease, illness, or malfunction); Wholeness of mind, body, and spirit.
Therefore, we provide wholistic, functional & integrative psychiatry and lifestyle & preventive medicine services, period! Everyone can get it because everyone deserves that!
When we say ALL people, we mean ALL people.
However, the statistics continue to show that this has not been the collective belief or practice in healthcare, leading to healthcare inequities that are especially evident amongst Black (African) Americans. These statistics are the direct result, reflection, and proof of systemic racism that also impacts health, health outcomes, and the healthcare system.
We are sensitive to this because we have direct, personal experience, insight, and witness as Black Americans, Black American women, Black Americans working in healthcare, and Black American healthcare professionals and experts.
The research and statistics merely serve to support this undeniable lived experience.
80% of chronic (mental & physical health) diseases & related deaths are preventable!
YET Black (African Americans), marginalized people of color, and/or people experiencing mental illness continue to die up to, if not more than, 20 years younger from PREVENTABLE chronic diseases & suicide (National Library of Medicine)
We wish that we could make it make sense, but it doesn't make sense because racism doesn't!
Therefore, we understand our purpose, one of which is to (pro)ACTIVELY change the system and its corresponding results, especially as it relates to Black (African) American people, so that we, too, can one day experience equity & equality across the board!
We say all this to provide full disclosure and say if you're down, we're down ❤️!
Naw!! So we're down if you are.
BUT we are a faith-integrated practice that believes in The Word (Jesus) as per the Bible, which means that we also believe in WHO God says YOU are and the power you inherently have. We know our purpose is to remind you to remember WHO YOU ARE and to BE ONLY that!
So when we say BE AFYA~ BE You. BE Health. BE Whole in mind, body & spirit. Prosper in ALL ways, always!! that is the what or who we are referring to 😉.
It only takes turning on the news to see and know that (unfortunately) the Bible has been intentionally mistaught, misrepresented, and used as a weapon throughout time by people and religions, "Christians" and "Christianity" included, producing widespread experiences of racism, racial trauma, and religious trauma, causing PTSD!
So trust & believe that we understand why this question would be asked, and the hesitancy that might be present. And so that Christians and Christianity can be experienced differently, we are careful to represent, incorporate, and accurately model The Word, as taught & modeled by The Word (Jesus).
Our job is to BE "imitators of Christ" through providing quality healthcare services, while you take(receive) & perceive from it what you will, no matter your spiritual beliefs, knowing that the Holy Spirit does the deep work.
Actions speak WAY louder than words, anyway! "Show & prove" right!
We say all this to provide full disclosure & awareness and say again that if you're down, we're down ❤️!
According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2025), health literacy means the ability to access, understand, review, and correctly & effectively use health information and health services to promote and maintain good health and well-being.
It also includes the ability to confidently self-advocate, interact, and express personal and societal needs for promoting health.
The primary way to improve health literacy is by having access (be included) to correct & accurate health information, as we don't know what we don't know, and what we don't know CAN, WILL & DOES hurt us!

The American Psychological Association defines a subspecialty as a concentrated area of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that:
Subspecialty clinics focus on providing services that are more specific and/or get to the root cause of an issue, illness, or dis-ease in hopes of providing comprehensive treatment options that improve, reverse, and/or prevent illness, or dis-ease, therefore, optimizing healthpan (life lived functioning and without dis-ease) and lifespan (long life lived)!
Always (yes, bias is indeed present 😉) but we also understand that everyone experiences life differently, so here are more specific things to consider...

This is because we know that our subspecialty services aren't for everybody, except those who know our services are specifically for them!
IYKYK!
Subspecialties are specifically, intentionally, and additionally sought out by clinicians and patients who tend to think outside the box, do things differently, and take risks because they know there is a better way, and therefore, expect better from themselves and out of life.
Intentionally investing energy, time, money, focus, and effort in studying, testing, practicing, creating, and researching are key requirements for a clinician who desires to support patients in achieving and experiencing optimal health, well-being, and prosperity.
To achieve your desired health and life, you, as the patient, must also BE intentional in investing your energy, time, and finances, actively engaging, trying, practicing, doing, creating, and researching, among other things.
Otherwise, the status quo will continue to be the norm.
Yes!
Because functional and integrative care is not for everyone, it is not necessary for everyone, and the out-of-pocket financial investment is significant and should be carefully considered.
We desire that you BE AFYA, but we need you first to BE ready.
The consultation helps you make a responsible evaluation and decide whether this is right for you at this moment, and if not, what to do in the meantime.

Functional (Root-Cause) Psychiatry & Integrative (Wholistic) Psychiatry integrates conventional medicine and psychiatry, upholding the standard of care (evidence-based medicine) while keeping you (mind, body & spirit) and getting to the root cause at the center!
Lifestyle Medicine includes your #1 resource as medicine...YOU (and your lifestyle)!
Preventative Medicine means just that....prevention! Whether preventing chronic disease, worsening of disease, or even just reducing the chances of being loaded up on medication!
As a result, evidenced-based functional & integrative psychiatry and lifestyle & preventative medicine go beyond the standard of care, going deeper than general psychiatry, as it understands that there is almost always a root cause to everything and that your body is designed to tend to, repair, and/or heal itself, in turn, producing better overall health outcomes & results!

NOPE!!
Although once upon a time, I loved being a PCP, which is why my approach is integrative family medicine/primary care + psychiatry!
As a clinic that offers specialty & subspecialty services (e.g., Integrative & Functional Psychiatry, Lifestyle Medicine), but does not practice as an assigned PCP, we do require that our patients have and maintain regular follow-up appointments with their PCP.
This ensures that all physical health-related issues are managed and monitored, allowing us, a holistic healthcare team, to assist in optimizing your health and outcomes!

Our child and adolescent psychiatry services are designed for individuals aged 2-17, ensuring that we can support your child at every stage of their development.
Children rely entirely on you, the caregiver, for their care, well-being, and livelihood. Children often reflect & model the behavior (and beliefs) they observe & experience from their parents. A disengaged, overly independent, or withdrawn child typically indicates emotionally unavailable or overbearing parents. While various factors beyond our control, such as the economy, finances, work-life balance, and parental childhood trauma, can influence this, it's essential to remember that change is always possible when we change our approach.
Therefore, we REQUIRE you as the caregiver to be FULLY ENGAGED & COMMITTED to yourself and your child's wellbeing. Failing to do so can lead to unnecessary challenges, especially until the child becomes more independent.
At The AFYA Effect Family Healthcare Services, we provide treatment for a variety of mental health conditions or symptoms of anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, trauma, ADHD, self-harm, binge eating disorder, obesity, suicidal ideation, obesity, treatment-resitance, and polypharmacy (so that we can deprescribe-reduce and/or discontinue medications, if appropriate).
Unfortunately, NO!
Our approach to healthcare goes beyond just providing medical services; it's about honoring our patients as vital partners in their personal healthcare journey. By not accepting insurance, we can dedicate the time to truly listen to our patients and work closely with them to create a personalized treatment plan that aligns with their unique needs and objectives. This approach empowers our patients and places them at the forefront of their health and well-being.
We do not accept insurance as insurance promotes treatment-focused rather than prevention-focused healthcare. This might look like being prescribed medication instead of possibly being prescribed medication, but certainly getting the education behind what caused the need for the prescription AND the empowerment to prevent the need for the prescription in the future potentially!
Not accepting insurance allows us to dedicate more time to listening to our patients and working closely to create a treatment plan that suits their unique needs and objectives.
Regrettably, the current healthcare system is often driven by insurance demands, prioritizing quantity over quality. This results in hurried appointments, unsatisfactory health outcomes, and burnout among healthcare providers. At our practice, we like to draw outside of the lines and think outside of the box. Our steadfast commitment is to prioritize quality over quantity, ensuring that every patient receives the time and attention they deserve and can trust in the exceptional standard of care they will receive.
We understand that healthcare costs can be a burden, so we offer a range of direct payment options, including debit, credit, FSA, HSA, ACH, check, PayPal, Cash App, Klarna, and Apple Pay. This diverse array of payment methods is intended to make our services more accessible and affordable for all our patients.
Regrettably, due to our out-of-network status, we cannot provide any medical services to patients under Medicaid or Medicare, as dictated by Medicaid and Medicare regulations. However, you always have the option to attend our complimentary (free) community education events!!
Regrettably, NO!

No!
Actually, the idea is that you won't have or need to! If you stay on as a member, it will be because you want to and not because you have to or need to! You can decide how long you want to invest in your health with us. For example, some people only want a general plan or a second opinion to review on their own or take to their doctor.
Others want psychiatry services regularly, so they decide to continue using our services on an as-needed basis once they are in a better (stable and empowered) mental, physical, and lifestyle health state or status. Some people opt to participate in the intensive program for the length of the program, and then they move on because they are now good to go!
It is up to you! Our clinic aims to get you feeling better, knowledgeable of your general health, empowered to contribute to and control your health, and less dependent on medication and your doctor, if appropriate.
Everyone's story and situation differ; we acknowledge that and adjust accordingly!
The AFYA Effect Family Healthcare Services offers personalized, compassionate, and all-encompassing care to our patients through a holistic (mind, body & spirit), culture, faith, and lifestyle (as) medicine-integrated, whole-person-centered approach.
Our team's extensive education and experience in nursing, family medicine, psychiatry, and functional & lifestyle medicine enable us to seamlessly integrate various specialties & subspecialties within medicine and nursing, ensuring you receive the highest quality of care.
We are one of the few clinics in the United States to offer this quadruple-board certified approach, perspective, and specialized mental and physical healthcare, in addition to being Black-owned and Black woman-owned.
This also allows us to uniquely serve Black (African American) men and Black (African American) women, and others who have been historically marginalized and excluded, those deemed as "treatment resistant" and/or those with polypharmacy (on multiple medications), to get to the root-cause, which might be something as simple as poorly absorbing protein, to deprescribing (reducing and/or discontinuing) medications, if appropriate!
We believe in the power of God in you, and we believe in precisely what God says about you! Therefore, we believe in you! As such, we encourage you to consider and practice all available and appropriate options rather than relying on a single approach, such as prescription medication-only, exercise-only, therapy-only, nutrition-only, etc., to achieve and maintain good health.
We do not accept insurance, as insurance promotes treatment-focused rather than prevention-focused healthcare. This might look like being prescribed medication instead of possibly being prescribed medication, but certainly getting the education behind what caused the need for the prescription AND the empowerment to potentially prevent the need for the prescription in the future!
Not accepting insurance allows us to dedicate more time to listening to our patients and working closely to create a treatment plan that suits their unique needs and objectives.
Our ultimate objective is for our patients to leave our care feeling seen, experiencing healing (which appears in many forms), and empowered. We aim to provide our patients with the knowledge and skills to manage their health and healing journey, with us serving as a valued support system rather than a crutch.
